M & J Levine Advertising was founded in New York in 1950 as a commercial printing company. The company founders are brothers Mervin and Jesse Levine. In 1956, they hired Lawrence Herbert, a graduate of Hofstra University, as a manager of the company’s advertising department. With his chemistry knowledge, Herbert set up a system that made it easy for the company to evaluate its pigment stock in the production of color inks. In 1962, the company’s shares lost $ 50,000, while Herbert made profits for the ink and printing division.
