Eco-Friendly Entertainment

While the whole world is going through a process of change, the concepts of respect for the environment and sustainability are getting more and more meaningful. While the festivals have been a part of this change for a long time, we have examined the best ones for you in detail.

Green Man (August 20-23)

The Green Man festival, held in Brecon Beacons in Wales, which respects the environment and protects the green, is one of the most famous festivals in the UK. Although it has a foundation based on music; literature, art and science also take place in Green Man and related activities and workshops are organized. Alternative power supplies are used in the festival in 10 different areas such as Mountain’s Foot, Walled Garden, Nature Nurture, Einstein’s Garden and Little Folk. The environmentally-friendly thinking system, from solar energy to hydrogen fuel cell and even pedal energy, is evident. Green Man, where plastic straws and glasses are banned, offers participants reusable glass alternatives. They also highlight that camping chairs or flimsy tents should not be brought. Because these materials, which will not adapt to the Welsh air, can be recycled if deformed. In the food section, there are vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free flavors, while it is possible to find suitable options for each type of diet.

DGTL (April 11-12)

DGTL, which was originally held only in Amsterdam, is now held in cities such as Santiago, Sao Paulo, Barcelona, Tel Aviv and Madrid on different dates. The festival, which follows the latest technological developments in order to increase environmental awareness, draws attention with its use of smart energy plan. The festival, which was held by solar powered batteries in 2019, is proof of this. In addition, it tries to prevent meat consumption by offering plant-based food alternatives. In this way, it reduces water and soil savings by reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Just like in Green Man, it removes disposable plastic glasses on the shelf and enables the use of reusable glasses with the system named “hardcup-system”. Classic garbage cans are not used in the festival, which gives importance to recycling. It supports the participants to sort their garbage through the ‘Resource Collection Points’ system. In this way, they now sign a 50 percent decrease in waste compared to the previous year.

Lollapalooza (July 30 – Aug 2)

The homeland of Lollapalooza, which is also held in Sweden, France, Germany, Argentina, Chile and Brazil, is actually Chicago. Ariana Grande, Tame Impala, The Chainsmokers, J Balvin and Lil Wayne are just a few of the names that took place at the festival in 2019. It is very valuable that such a large-scale organization draws attention to sustainability. The three pillars of Lollapalooza are to minimize waste, reduce carbon footprint and support local businesses. It supports coming to the festival ground by bike, public transport or on foot, while working with Green Mountain Energy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. In order to draw attention to the reuse of materials, BYOBottle provides reuse of water bottles and prevents plastic waste.

EDP Cool Jazz (July 3-30)

EDP Cool Jazz, which takes place in Portugal under the sponsorship of EDP, one of the biggest electricity suppliers in Europe, gives place to different artists on different days in July, unlike other festivals. Just like the others, when it comes to environmental health, EDP Cool Jazz takes almost the same steps to draw attention to this issue. With Zero Waste Movement glasses suitable for recycling are used, food not served to the service is delivered to those in need, and the use of plastics is prohibited.

Northside (June 6-8)

NorthSide, which has been hosting music lovers in Aarhus in Denmark since 2010, has taken an environmentalist attitude from the very first moment. The motto of NorthSide, which invites not only those who participate in the festival, but everyone in this industry to be sustainable, is ‘Lead The Way’ … With a sense of being a guide, it handles every detail from design to food and beverage supply. In collaboration with WorldPerfect, which has been working on sustainability since 2012, the festival carries out the waste classification in accordance with environmental health. In food supply, it works with 100 percent organic companies, avoids waste of food and prioritizes local food. The most appropriate movement of the festival to its environmentalist attitude is that there is no parking space for cars. So you can reach the festival area by foot, bike or public transportation. NorthSide also has studies on material use. It has been paying attention, in cooperation with FSC Denmark, to the fact that all paper and cardboard materials have been FSC (Forestry Board) certified, for the last three years. In all posters and flyers, stone paper is used, which uses half as much energy and does not require water, compared to normal paper.
